Personal Message To GMCC Members

I want all of the GMCC Members to know how much I appreciate the support that you have shown me since I have been here. That support was important in my decision to take on the General Manager position. I am excited and looking forward to the many challenges facing GMCC. I wanted everyone to know that I will always make decisions based on what is in the best interest of the Club and I am sure there will be times when members do not agree with Club Policy, but I will always be fair, consistent and professional in my stance on all Club issues. Anyone that would like to voice a concern, complaint or compliment, please let me know either by calling, emailing or dropping by the office. I appreciate the trust that the Board of Directors has bestowed upon me and I will do all that I can to never let you down.

PLEASE – We Need Your Help: We continue to have a problem with people taking our towels home. We have had to replace towels twice since I have been here. So, please check to see if you have any GMCC towels at home, in your vehicles, lockers, etc., and return them to the Pro Shop. Your support is appreciated! Also, if you purchase range balls and do not hit all of them, please do not put them in your trunks or golf bag. If you would return them to the Pro Shop or just leave them on the range, it would help us not to run short on range bags or balls.

Golf Rules and Regulations

As I am getting my feet on the ground, I am seeing areas that we can improve upon, that will enhance our golf operations. I have been in meetings with the Greens Committee, Golf Committee, and Board of Directors and have been given the unenviable task of enforcing our golf rules and regulations. My plan is to publish what is expected of our members and guests in order to educate everyone on what is expected. These rules will be enforced fairly and without bias to all players by the Golf Shop Staff. In reviewing these rules, they include:

· All members and guests are required to check in with the Pro Shop and sign in their guest prior to beginning play.

· Tee times can be made one week in advance.

· Each player must have his or her own equipment.

· Slow play, which results in holding up other golfers, will not be tolerated. Players must maintain pace with other golfers or lose their position on the course. Therefore, players are expected to maintain pace of play throughout their round of golf. If there is an open hole in front of your group, you must allow faster players to play through, regardless of the number of players in the group.

· On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays during the months of April – October, no “Fivesomes” will be permitted to tee off between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and noon.

· No player may start on any hole other than No. 1 unless permitted to do so by the Golf Professional or his Staff. Golfers who finish the 9th hole and do not tee off No. 10 as soon as the hole is open, forfeit their position and must not restart if they impair approaching golfers in any way.

Dress Code

The following dress code is mandatory for all players. Improperly dressed golfers will be asked to change before playing. If you are in doubt concerning your attire, please call the Pro Shop before starting play.

Deb Husk, President 18H Ladies;
Jeff Curtis, Head Golf Professional;
and Brad Fox, Grounds Superintendent
at the Ladies 9H & 18H Kickoff Breakfast.

Cart Rules

We no longer allow the use of handicap flags. We allow carts off of the path the entire year, weather permitting. However, when it is too wet to get off the cart paths, all carts are restricted to cart path only. Also, we are in the process of putting wooden posts up on each side of the fairway as you approach the green. These posts are to let you know when the carts must return to the cart path. These will be in place on all Par 4’s and Par 5’s. Carts should remain on the cart path on Par 3’s at all times. In my short time here at GMCC, I have been shocked to see golf carts driven in some of the places that I’ve seen them. We want to educate and inform the membership of what is expected in regard to these rules and regulations and that the Pro Shop is expected to enforce these rules. One of my main goals as your Golf Professional is to elevate the overall quality of your golf experience. By having the entire membership on the same page, we will have a club that we can all be proud of.     Jeff Curtis, Head Golf Pro

          PROFESSIONAL SHOP UPDATE-April 2008

I want to let everyone know how excited I am to be here at Green Meadow. I appreciate everyone who has come by the golf shop to say “hello” and introduce themselves. Please be patient with me in getting to know everyone’s name…you only have one new name to remember, while I have 400+ members to remember.

There are many ideas about tournaments, activities and promotions that I think could be successful here at Green Meadow. I hope to promote your current tournament schedule and possibly begin some new programs. Any member who has any ideas or events that they would like to see implemented, please let me know.

Golf Lessons – Anyone looking for golf lessons, either myself, or our assistant, Nathan Myers, are available for lessons. Now is the time of year to improve your fundamentals and get the season started off in the right direction.

Tournament Schedule – We are in the process of finalizing our tournament schedule. In future years, I will have our tournament schedule organized and set in place by February.

Tournament Highlights and Dates of Importance:

April – April 5th MGA Breakfast SWAT – April 7th Kiwanis Club Tournament – April 8th, 9th and 10th, Course closed for aerification of greens. April 14th East-TN Seniors. April 16th Dogfights Begin (Wednesday Nights – 5:30 p.m.)

May - I am planning on holding a qualifier for the McGladrey Team Championship on Saturday, May, 31st. I understand they planned on conducting this tournament last year, but cancelled it due to lack of interest. The Club’s that I know who participated in this event last year raved about the experience they had at the section championship. The format is a 3-person team playing their own ball using 50% of each person’s handicap. Each player’s score must be used 3 times during the round. The winning team, then joins the golf professional in advancing to the section championship in Nashville in August. The winners there, advance to the National Championship at Pinehurst in October. We will have posters and information up in the Clubhouse soon!

June – 2nd Annual Green Meadow Invitational on June 14th and 15th. I understand last year’s event was successful, and we hope to make this year’s tournament even bigger and better.

Our Member – Member will be held June 28th and 29th.

August – We are planning to play the Meadowlark Tournament (Member-Guest) on August 23rd and 24th. We will have more details about cost and sign-up dates in next month’s newsletter.

The Club Championship for both Men and Ladies will be held August 30th, 31st and September 1stLabor Day Weekend.

In order for our golf tournaments to be a success, we need the support and participation of our members. I am looking forward to a busy and exciting 2008 golf season!

Pro Shop Merchandise – We have new merchandise arriving in the proshop – Ashworth shirts – Nike apparel – FootJoy shoes and gloves – I hope everyone will stop by and see, not only the new merchandise, but the pricing. I think that you will see that our pricing will be competitive with all other retailers in the area. If there are any items that we do not have in stock, we will be happy to special order for you. We want to be the “ProShop” for all your golfing needs.

           PROFESSIONAL SHOP UPDATE-March 2008

A Special Greeting To Green Meadow Country Club Members

I would like to introduce myself - My name is Jeff Curtis and I have been given the privilege of becoming your Head Golf Professional and will be on board March 17th.  A little about me - I grew up in Indiana, North Carolina, and Tennessee, (my blood definitely runs orange - Go VOLS!).  I played all sports as a youngster and wasn't bitten by the golf bug until high school.  I attended Lee College in Cleveland, Tennessee, on a golf scholarship and then entered the golf business in 1983.  I attained my PGA Membership in 1985 and was the Head Golf Professional at Rolling Hills Golf Club in Cleveland, TN, from 1986 to 1992.  I was then the Head Golf Professional and Director of Golf at Tellico Village from 1993 to 1999.  I have spent the last 7 years as the Head Golf Professional at Gatlinburg Golf Club.  I hope that my wealth of experience and passion for the golf business will be an asset to Green Meadow Country Club.  I will be available for lessons to those hoping to improve their game.  I will stock the golf shop with clubs and apparel for both men and ladies at prices that are competitive with all retailers.
I also look forward to adding some exciting events to your tournament schedule.  But most of all, I look forward to providing the service and personal attention that will enhance your overall golf experience at Green Meadow Country Club.

On the personal side, I am married to a truly wonderful lady, Donna and we each have grown children,
(Ali - 19) and (Brandon - 22)

Both Donna and I are excited and anxious to get to know each of you and look forward to the privilege of
becoming members of the Green Meadow Country Club Family.   Sincerely, Jeff Curtis

        PROFESSIONAL SHOP UPDATE-Feb 2008

Well, as we all know, Mother Nature has not been too cooperative to our Membership lately and sunny days with playable temperatures have been far and few between. It won’t be long before the birds start chirping and the azaleas start blooming, and we will all know that the first leg of the Grand Slam is just around the corner. I would like to commend all of our junior golfers who have braved the cold conditions lately and continue to practice on cold and dreary afternoons when their friends are probably at the mall or playing X-Box by the fire. We have a few juniors who have the chance to develop into solid collegiate players if they continue their work habits and are able to produce some low numbers when the “popcorn machine is on.” For every day that they are not out hitting balls and working on their game, some other junior is, and will be waiting eagerly to take that coveted spot on their college golf team. This game is a one man sport and requires extreme self discipline and patience when trying to develop the finer points of the game and compete at a high level. But all of those practice balls hit during the cold days of winter will pay off for these young players in the heat of summer when a tournament victory is on the line. I have a feeling that in a couple of years there will be quality representation in the classroom and on the course from a few of the Green Meadow kids.

Having just returned from this year’s PGA Merchandise Show and Demo Day, the market for 2008 will be filled with all types of new trinkets for those who want the latest and greatest in equipment. The drivers keep getting bigger and the sounds keep getting louder from some of these clubs. New forged irons from Titleist, Callaway, Nike, Taylor Made and Mizuno all look great for you single digit handicappers. The Ping G10 Series is as good as any product Ping has ever made, and their Rapture brand remained the same as last year’s model. If you have never been to this Show, and would like to see everything in the world remotely related to the game of golf, then I would encourage you to attend this event. It is too big to be seen in one day and requires comfortable shoes for all of the walking you will do in the Orange County Convention Center.

Tiger Story

I attended a management seminar last week at Isleworth Golf Club. For those who don’t know, Tiger and about forty other PGA Tour Members live on this property. After the seminar, I was talking to the staff in the Professional Shop. It was a very windy cold day for Orlando and the golf course was empty, due to conditions. About five minutes later I looked out the window at the first tee, which was only some twenty feet away, and noticed three carts had pulled up to the tee. We were wondering who would be playing in such inclement weather, until we noticed it was Tiger and Hank Haney, along with Arjon Atwall, another Tour member and two other young players. One who worked in the bag room and the other was the Club Champion. The staff informed me that Tiger is in the gym at six o’clock a.m. every day, bar none for two hours, and will play and practice on schedule regardless of the conditions. For those who think he took time off since November, that is false. He has been practicing harder in the last two months than he has in his career and is on a mission this year. The Head Professional informed me that a couple of weeks ago, Tiger had made a game with three other PGA Tour members who also play at Isleworth. Tiger called to say he was late but for them to start and he would catch them, and for every hole he missed, they would win the hole, and he was playing their best ball against his. Tiger showed up on the seventh tee and was six down to the three fellow Tour stars. Tiger closes them out on the sixteenth tee, 3 and 2. If you want to do the math, he made 9 straight birdies and they halved the sixteenth hole. Just another day at the Club for the World’s Greatest Player.

This should be a great year for golf, and I feel that something special might happen for all of us to see.

                 Monday Golf Rules--Jan 2008

Just a reminder of the rules for play on Mondays:  The Greens Committee and the Board of Directors voted to allow play on Mondays when the Club and Pro Shop are closed during the winter.  However, the course will be closed when the Greens Superintendent has work to be done on this day.  This past Monday we tried to close the front nine for a while so Brad could spray the greens for "Brown Patch".  However, we had members going off on No. 1, No. 7, & No. 10 with the course close signs in place.

We will not close the course unless it is absolutely necessary, so please help us in giving Brad and his crew a little time each Monday to do the items that he needs to take care of.  Also, remember that his pattern for greens cutting is: 1, 4, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8,  6, & 9.  After that the greens mower should be ahead of the players so he can start cutting the back nine.

Your support is appreciated in watching for these "course closed" signs on No. 1 & No. 10.   Thanks, Bob Perkinso

           PROFESSIONAL SHOP UPDATE-Jan 2008

With the Holidays behind us, we hope all of you had a safe and happy time and Santa was also able to fill everyone’s request. The weather has been exceptionally warm, and I am glad everyone has had the opportunity to get in a few rounds of golf that they normally would not be able to do this time of year. Let’s hope that the warm trend continues throughout the next couple of months and everyone gets to keep their swings in mid season form for the entire year.

We had a fun “Open House” night and I would like to thank everyone who attended and participated in the festivities this year. My wife and I enjoyed the hospitality and gift-wrapping extravaganza that continued for a couple of hours longer than we had expected. When “Santa Gillespie” showed up with his sack full of goodies, the bartering began and a good time was had by all for the rest of the evening.

As most of you are aware, the golf course is closed on Mondays when Brad and his crew have maintenance work scheduled that is difficult or unsafe to do if when there is play. Maintaining turf on a golf course is light years from what you may do to your lawn and things have to be done this time of year in order to have good surfaces and playing conditions in the spring and summer. Please help out Brad and his staff on Monday’s if you see signage on the tee that the course is currently closed and when it does open all play needs to start on number one tee, in order to allow his crew to continue to spray, top dress, verti cut, or whatever may be scheduled that day. The course takes a beating on the weekends and needs time on Monday to recoup and get cleaned up for the week ahead. I know all of the maintenance staff will appreciate your cooperation with this Monday schedule and remembering that this is only being done to provide the best possible product available for the entire membership every day.

If the weather gets too cold to play for a long period of time, there are plenty of drills that you can do to keep your swing in shape and ready for warm weather.

1. Keep a tennis ball by the remote and squeeze it with your left hand while you are watching ESPN. You can never get your left side too strong and most people are right handed anyway, and do not realize how weak they really are in their left side.

2. Swing a wedge with just your left hand only. Put your right hand in your pocket and go in the garage or outside and just swing the club several times this way. You will immediately notice that you don’t get the club to the top of the swing without your wrist collapsing, and the club feels extremely heavy. All of this tells you what you “do not do: with your left side in the swing that you need to be doing. My college golf coach had our team hit balls for one hour every day with just the left hand. By seasons end all of the team was so strong they could hit five irons 160 yards with one hand, and we NEVER hooked the driver coming down the stretch with water or out-of-bounds left and a tournament on the line.

Make swings with or without a club, looking at yourself in a full-length mirror. One thing that all good players do is “keep their head still.” Not keep their head down, but still. This sounds so basic and everyone thinks they stay still, but in actuality, they do not. By staring at your self in a mirror and making full swings you will be able to see if and how much your head moves in your swing. Great players such as Tiger, Phil, Ernie, VJ, Hogan, etc, never move their head from the time the club goes back until it has gone through the hitting area. This also is the number one reason why short putts are missed. I have always told students “if you peak, it will leak.”

Practice putting 3-4 footers and do not move your head until you hear the ball go in the cup. For some unknown reason, people want to move, lean, steer, guide and “Wish” a short putt in the hole. It’s not life or death. Just relax your grip and move the putter head in the direction you want the ball to go. You will be amazed at how easy it really is.

Work on these drills and you will take your foursomes milk money next time the weather is warm, and they will be wondering how you have improved so much. Birdies, Kenny Szuch, PGA

PROFESSIONAL SHOP UPDATE - November 2007

Fall has finally arrived! Cooler temperatures and some much needed rain have been a welcome relief. There are still some warm days left, and these afternoons and evenings would be a great time to enjoy a relaxing, carefree, no hassles round of golf. The first tee is usually wide open, and the golfers are few, so come on out and play.

Green Meadow Junior Golfers Stand Out in Competition

Some of Green Meadow’s best junior golfers have been competing in various competitions, and they have been performing very well. Allie Knight and Grant Daugherty competed in an AAJGT event held at River Islands Golf Club earlier this fall. Allie finished second in the girls high school division and Grant won the boys 7th-8th-grade division.

On October 4, Green Meadow hosted the TSSAA Region 2AAA Girls Tournament. Green Meadow members Allie Knight, who plays for Bearden High School, and Melanie Manis, who plays for William Blount High School, both qualified for the TSSAA Girls AAA State Tournament with rounds of 80. Both performed admirably at the state tournament held at Old Fort Golf Club in Murphreesboro. Congratulations to all of these young golfers!

The Junior Club Championship will be held November 10-11. Contact the Professional Shop for more information.

Tips to Help Your Game Through the Winter

If you do not get out to play all that much during the colder months, here are just a few things you can do to help your game stay sharp. First, do some stretching. Pay particular attention to the hamstrings, calves, shoulders, and lower back. Increasing your flexibility in those muscle groups will help improve your swing, posture, and club head speed. Secondly, swing a weighted club once in a while. Ben Hogan was a big advocate of swinging a weighted club. Swinging a weighted club engages and strengthens your bigger muscles and can help improve your club head speed. If you do not have a weighted club, we have a demo in the Professional shop you are welcome to try.

Christmas is Right Around the Corner

Let us help you with your Christmas shopping! A new club or a new shirt might make the perfect Christmas gift. A set of junior clubs might be the perfect gift for that young golfer getting started in the game. We have new fall and winter outerwear that has just arrived and more will be arriving soon. As a reminder, to help us with our accounting, we would like to have all credit cleared out by December 31.

End-of-Season MGA Events

Men’s Golf Association events have concluded for the season. Congratulations to the following Top Ten individuals for their total points and support of the MGA for the entire season.

1. Lloyd Sentell 2. Bruce Gorenflo 3. Jim Rucker 4. Ted Williams 5. Harley Silver 6. Don Wood 7. David Jones 8. Tom Claiborne 9. Ivory Bishop 10. Jerry Jones

A special thank you goes out to David Jones and Bruce Gorenflo for giving their time throughout the year to put together the schedule of events for your Men’s Golf Association and participating in all of these tournaments. I know these individuals could use some new energy for next years season, so if you are interested in serving on the MGA committee, please contact them to volunteer your time and support.

Four of our members, Mike and Tammy Cheek, and Steve and Terry Ellis will be paired with myself, November 5-7, in the 11th Annual TGA Las Vegas Pro-Am. I know this team has been practicing, and hopefully we can bring the Championship trophy back to Green Meadow for the following year.

PROFESSIONAL SHOP UPDATE - OCT  2007

With a touch of fall in the air, it is great to see the Smokies again after it seemed like daily they were hidden in a haze of 90-degree heat that stayed with us much longer than we needed. Our aerification is recovering rapidly, and we hope everyone takes advantage of the cooler weather and gets to play frequently for the upcoming weeks.

The battle of the ages has come to an end for this year, in what has become a Green Meadow ritual known as the Old’uns vs. Young’uns, or Ryder Cup bragging rights for a season. The old guys jumped out to a first day lead of two points, but the fifty four holes in two days seemed to catch up and the young guns made up the difference during the final singles matches to secure the coveted, champagne filled cup for another year. For those who competed, a big thank you to all. And for those who did not, if you like playing and competing for what the game was meant to be, I encourage you to sign up next year and take part in golf in it’s true form. Playing for nothing but the love of the game and camaraderie with your team and fellow members. We need more events that show this spirit of golf and maybe we can come up with a few new ideas for next season. Ask anyone who competed and I don’t think they will say anything other than how much fun it was, other than trying to hit a shot from somewhere that they have never seen on the property, or what is referred to as the opening round “Alternate Shot Format.”

By press time our fall rendition of the 17 Cent Club will have traveled east to compete in their bi-annual tournament. This is no tournament for the meek or thin skinned, but it is cherished by the Green Meadow members who participate and support the tradition of something started years ago, and will continue for generations to come. Here’s hoping all have a fun event and a safe trip to and from the mountains. The Wednesday and Friday noon game will be lonely while you are gone, but will be awaiting your safe return home.

Our mixed couples members have approached us and we are in the process of scheduling a nine-hole “glow ball” event in early November that would also include food, prizes and other evening activities following golf. Be on the look out for the official sign up for this event and get in early, due to the size of the field being limited with a nine-hole format. For those who have never played in the dark before, it is loads of fun and a great social activity for the participants. Official “glow golf balls” will be provided to all participants along with other glowing items to make the event fun. We look forward to this event in a few weeks.

Some of the fall apparel has started to arrive in both men’s and ladies lines. Stop by and take a look at the new fashions when you have time. Also, for those who have Professional Shop tournament credit, we have to clear our accounting up and this credit needs to be redeemed by December 31st of this year.

We have had a busy, fun filled season and on behalf of the entire golf operations staff, it is a pleasure working for the membership and doing what we can to make sure your golf experience a memorable one each and every time you use the facilities of your club.

Our thought for the day is, “If everyone repaired their ball mark on the green and just one more, there would never be any balls marks, anywhere.”Basketball is just around the corner, Kenny Szuch, PGA

PROFESSIONAL SHOP UPDATE - AUGUST 2007

GREEN MEADOW MEMBERS CAPTURE BLOUNT COUNTY AMATEUR,
CHAMPIONSHIP  AND  SENIOR  DIVISIONS!!!!

Congratulations, kudos and a lot of other salutations go out to our members, Kevin Morgan and Dr. Jim Gillespie for capturing their respective divisions in this year’s Blount County Amateur Championship. Both Kevin and Doc laid low the first day of the event, then put it in overdrive for the final three rounds and never looked back as they won their flight easily over a strong field of Blount county players. The Tournament was well represented by Green Meadow low handicappers, and a salute goes out to all who played for our club during the four day event.

Other members with respective finishes were:
Michael Bradshaw, Scott Hutchison, Gary Wear, Ben Long, Bobby Perkinson and Bob Brim

GARY WEAR WINS INNAGURAL MEN’S  MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

Low handicapper, and father of future superstar Braden Wear, defeated Kevin Morgan 1 up after 19 holes to be crowned the first Green Meadow Men’s Match Play Champion.   Gary breezed through a difficult bracket in the Championship flight to defeat a group of opponents consisting of John Lay, Mike Bradshaw, and Charlie Beasley before edging Blount County Amateur Champion and collegiate All American,  Kevin Morgan in extra holes. Gary firmly stroked in a three footer to claim the crown and can now be seen throughout the club lobbying for an annual parking space.  Rumor is his space will be next to the left-handed Club Champion spot.

WATERS STANDS TALL IN 2007 GREATER KNOXVILLE AMATEUR

Senior eligible, “coach” Ron Waters completed a marathon week of 36 holes a day for several days and came away with a second place finish in the Senior Division of this year’s Great Knoxville Amateur Championship. Ron posted a very respectable four day total of 293 to capture second among a strong group of Knoxville are a senior players.  Ron will be a force to reckon with as he now enters the white tee zone and short par fives.

Parrot Head Weekend SOLDOUT, again

The 2007 version of the Meadow Lark Member Guest Tournament, otherwise known as Cheeseburger In Paradise is sold out and a waiting list is full for this fun filled weekend. Your committee has been working hard preparing all of the details for this year’s event and it will be here before we know it. Everyone is looking forward to the golf and festivities that are scheduled. This one will be hard to top next year, but some thing tells me the waiting list will still be there.

New Smith and Tweed moisture wicking shirts are in for those humid summer rounds

PROFESSIONAL  SHOP  UPDATE  -- July  2007

As a busy June comes to an end, our activity for July will also be full. The finals of our inaugural Men’s Match Play Championship will be coming soon and the overall Champion plus flight winners will be crowned by July first. Thanks to all who participated in this event, and we look for a larger field for next years tournament.

The Tennessee Women’s State Amateur has come and gone and by all results it was a successful event for everyone involved. The TGA staff was extremely please with the golf course, service and overall hospitality our membership showed to the players and committee. A big thankyou goes out to all the members who volunteered their time and energy to make the event happen. We could not have put on the Tournament without his or her help, and I speak for everyone involved when I say, “Thank you for your participation.”

Coming up in July will be our July 4th events and the World Famous “Longest Hole Challenge.” Start loosening up if you are in to marathon golf and want to play the course from spots you are unfamiliar with. It’s a lot of fun and I am sure there will be a big crowd on #3 tee that afternoon as the event begins.

July 11th we will be hosting the Blount County Amateur and July 12th thru 15th the Greater Knoxville Amateur will be staged at Green Meadow. The entries for the Blount County are in the Professional Shop for morning or afternoon tee times. If you are interested in playing, stop by and fill out the form to secure your spot in this year’s event. This will be the anniversary of our own Doc Gillespie’s remarkable final round score of “61” to win the event and literally blow the field away. That round deserves to be talked about every once in a while. Let’s all hope we can beat our age by that many once in our life.

Tour Talk

For those who think life of a PGA Tour player is glorious, here’s an example of a typical week. I was invited to spend a day at Oakmont for the U.S. Open last week with the host Professional and our Invitational entertainer, “The Jolly Jester.” The Magic Man was in the clubhouse Friday afternoon doing some tricks for a group of players and their wives, including local entry Eric Axley. Just as the trick was being done, Angel Cabrera hits a nine iron a foot from the hole, on his last hole of the day to bump Eric and 17 others out of the Open for the last two rounds. Eric got up from the table and told his wife, “Let’s head to the airport.” Expenses for the week include airfare, hotel, meals, caddy, etc. Easily a few thousand dollars. Take home for the week was “O.” No big salaries on the Tour. You are paid on performance only, the way it should be.

PROFESSIONAL SHOP UPDATE  -- June  2007

Senior Club Championship Winners:  Lynn Tittsworth,
Ivory Bishop & Jim Gillespie
Kenny & GM Invitational Champions: Kevin Morgan,
Jeff Golliher & O.R. Spangler

First and foremost, would somebody please do a rain dance? As of print time our course is in dire need of moisture and that weeping sound you hear on your back swing is our greens and J.D. crying for help.

The Inaugural Green Meadow Invitational is in the books, and I feel a good time was had by all. The magic of the Jolly Jester, green speed of 11, and guests coming in from all over the country made for a festive and competitive weekend. When the smoke cleared our golf course held it’s own to old man par and the Champion at 3-under was Knoxville’s Jeff Golliher. Jeff outlasted Green Meadow’s Kevin Morgan by one shot, followed by O.R. Spangler and Ron Waters. In our Senior Championship division Bobby Perkinson and Jim Gillespie ended in a tie and decided to split the winnings in true gentleman fashion. The First Flight was captured by our own Terry Yoakum in a one shot victory over the Jolly Jester. I guess the magic man could not make the golf ball disappear when he wanted to. Richard Marsh had a five shot victory in the Second Flight over Joe Cooper, followed by Scott Lumpkin and Bill Nix. Third Flight honors went to visiting entry Steve Woodall who squeaked out a one shot win over Fred Houchins. Our Fourth Flight of ladies added a special atmosphere to the event and when all was done Sharon Billingsley had carved out a two shot win over Tammy Cheek. Kudos to all who participated in this first of many Invitational’s at our facility. The word on the street has spread about the event, and I would anticipate a sell out next year.

Our Senior Club Championship concluded last week, and we have a new Champion for 2007. Dr. Jim Gillespie edged out last year’s winner Ron Waters by one shot and received the Championship trophy along with the “priceless” parking space for a year. Bill Cox and Sonny Kyle were also in contention for the title, but Doc’s steady play and short game once again came through when it counted. Our Super Senior division ended in a FIVE-Way playoff with Lloyd Sentell, Lynn Tittsworth, Larry Brady, Carl McDonald and Wayne King. Lynn’s birdie on the first playoff hole claimed the win and Carl McDonald secured second place. In the first flight another playoff was needed, and Ivory Bishop edged out Steve Daves, while in the Second Flight Jim McBrearty defeated Bill Durrant in yet another playoff.

Our Junior Golf, Swim and Tennis Camp is just around the corner on June 5-8. It plans to be a great week of instruction for the juniors as well as a daily cool down splash in the pool before resuming action. Please contact the Professional shop for any information you may need about the camp or to sign someone up.

Don’t ask me how, but the 2007 Cap’s First Tee Classic Pro-Am winner’s trophy is at Green Meadow for a year. Somehow I squeaked out a victory in a shoot out with 17 other area Professionals and their amateur partner at Cherokee Country Club the day after our Invitational. If that doesn’t convince me that the Golf God’s were watching over us that day, it never will. Kenny Szuch, PGA.

PROFESSIONAL SHOP UPDATE  -- May  2007

By press time some 75-100 of our Members will have gone, played and returned from the annual spring “17cent club” event in South Carolina. This weekend event turns our tee sheet into a ghost town, but I think it is great that so many can continue to participate annually in an out-of-town event that enjoys excellent golf, competition and a few libations after hours. Here’s hoping all had a trip full of stories to tell and a safe return to their home club. Not to mention someone will return a big winner in the pocket.

Tournament Info

Meadow Lark 2007

The official sign up is out for this year’s event and a waiting list is sure to happen. For everyone’s information the committee has introduced the following sign up requirements. The member MUST sign up for the event in the front office and submit a deposit for the tournament. After the office has received this deposit, they will inform the Professional Shop of the next entry and that individual and his guest will then have their names added to the OFFICIAL sign up board. The field has been expanded to 64 teams and our “Cheeseburger In Paradise” theme is self explanatory. If you have any thoughts of playing in this event I would strongly suggest that you sign up early to secure
