News from Pool & Tennis --- August 2008

We have had a great summer so far at the pool.  Thank you to everyone who joined us for the July 4th festivities;  we hope you had as much fun as we did! Congratulations to the 2008 Green Meadow Swim Team for a great 2nd place finish in the Greater Knoxville Area Swim Association Championships. The Swim Team season and Water Aerobics classes have come to an end, but remember the pool will be open through Labor Day, so we hope to see everyone out enjoying the last few weeks of summer.

We are still scheduling pool parties (during and after regular hours), and it is a great way to end the summer and start the new school year. Please call or come by the pool to schedule your party.

Many of our lifeguards have started back to school or will soon be heading back to college. We just want to say a big thanks to them for their dedication to keeping our members safe while at the pool. We hope they have a great year and look forward to seeing everyone back next spring.

Week-day hours will be changing to 2 pm until 8 pm, and we will continue our regular week-end hours through Labor Day. If you have any questions or concerns, please give Dan or Stacy a call at the pool (982-8783, ext. 15).         Dan Rule and Stacy Honabach

News from Pool & Tennis --- August 2007

It has been busy at the pool this month with hot dry days, swim lessons, water aerobics, and pool parties. A lot of activities are winding down start of school since school has begun.

Our swim team had another extremely successful season with a “3-Peat” Championship at the Greater Knoxville Area Interclub Swim Association Championships held at the UT Aquatic Center July 20 – 22. It was an amazing team effort and it was certainly great to see all our hard work throughout the summer pay off. We had a lot of fun this summer and capped it all off with our team banquet on Monday, July 23. Green Meadow Swim Team took about 28 swimmers to compete at UT in the AAU Junior Olympics the first week in August and came away with many medals, including several golds! The Green Meadow Swim Team also came away with an overall 3rd place finish. Congratulations to those athletes.

We will continue to keep lane ropes in the pool for lap swim. We have several parties scheduled during August; so if you are planning a pool party, please call to get it scheduled while we still have dates available.

Our rubico courts are suffering the effects of the hot dry conditions. Due to the water shortage, we will not be watering and grooming the courts on a regular basis. Please let us know if you plan to use those courts and we will do our best to get them ready. Thanks for your help and understanding in this matter. The Ladies Interclub Tennis Team is finishing its season. Our youth tennis clinics ended July 25th, but if you are interested in private lessons, please call for information. Our ladies enjoyed tennis matches to celebrate both the French Open and Wimbledon finals. Thanks to Debbie Slizewski for organizing those activities.

We are continuing our water aerobics classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Stacy Honabach has done an excellent job leading these classes. We plan to continue classes through the first week of September, so come out for a great workout in the pool.

Our lifeguards have gone back to school – we thank them for another summer of hard work keeping our members safe and our facilities in good shape. Millie Franklin will be leaving Green Meadow at the end of the season. She came to the Club when she was 10 years old as a Swim Team member. She became a lifeguard at age 15 and later served as a Head Lifeguard and has been a Manager at the pool for the last several seasons. She just graduated from UT with her Masters Degree in Accounting and will be joining the Pricewaterhouse Accounting Firm in September. Millie will be greatly missed at Green Meadow Pool, but she will still work with the swim team when she can. We wish her well in her accounting career.

Remember, the pool will be closed after Labor Day, see you next season. Karen Rule

NEWS FROM THE POOL - September 2006

We are sorry to see the pool season come to an end. It has been another busy summer. We have never had a hotter summer, and it has been difficult to keep the water cool enough to be refreshing. We want to thank our lifeguards for their hard work keeping our members safe, and taking care of our facilities. They are responsible for the 55 hours per week that the pool is open to the membership, as well as after hour parties, and the many hours it takes to clean and maintain the facilities. We wish them well this year with school and look forward to their return next spring.

We have really enjoyed getting to know our new members and look forward to seeing everyone back next season. If you have comments or ideas about programs you would be interested in having at the pool next season, please let us know. We have had great participation this summer with the Swim Team, swim lessons, water aerobics, and lap swimming.

The pool will be closing for the swimming season on Tuesday, September 5th, the day after Labor Day .

Have a great year!     Swimmingly,     Karen Rule & Staff

NEWS FROM THE POOL-August 2006

Extreme temperatures have made the pool a very popular place this summer! It has been a great place to come cool off after golfing or playing tennis! We are continuing our Water Aerobic classes, so if you are interested, please call or come by the pool for the schedule. The pool has been a great place to have parties this summer. If you are interested in having a pool party, please call the pool office for available times.

The Swim Team has concluded the 2006 season with a 5-0 dual meet record. They also captured another Greater Knoxville Area Championship title at the UT Aquatic Center held July 21-23, out scoring thirty other teams. Green Meadow has won the title five out of the last six years.

Many of our lifeguards will be returning to school in the next couple of weeks, so please take the opportunity to thank them for their hard work when you see them. We have had extremely high temperatures and busy days at the pool. Our guards are all Red Cross Certified, and have a lot of responsibility keeping our members and our facilities safe. We want to remind members to help keep our pool area and facilities clean by placing trash in the containers provided. We also want to remind parents to keep a close watch on small children around the pool and the parking lot area. Our guards have a large area to watch and can not keep an eye on any particular child or just one area of the pool.

We want to remind everyone to sign in upon entering the pool area, to pay for guests, and that outside food and drinks are not allowed at the pool. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation!

SWIMMING POOL NEWS -- December  2005

Please mark your calendars and plan your vacations around City Meet which will be July 21-23, 2006 (Friday-Sunday) at the UT Aquatic Center.

SWIMMING POOL NEWS -- SEPT  2005

It is hard to believe summer and the pool season are over. We have certainly had a successful one. We were glad to see everyone back this year and have enjoyed getting to know our new families and look forward to seeing everyone again next spring.

We continued our lap swim program this year with more folks participating than ever. Our new Water Aerobics Class got off to a bit of a slow start, but has continued to grow. We plan to begin as soon as the pool opens next season and hope to see more people involved. We hope to offer programs of interest to our members, so please contact us with your ideas and suggestions.

Our Pre-Competitive Swim Program was at capacity this summer, and we plan to offer the program again next summer. Our older Swim Team members do a great job teaching children to enjoy the water while learning the basic swimming skills.

As many of you know, our Swim Team completed the Dual Meet Season undefeated, and came home with the Greater Knoxville Area Championship Trophy. It was a well-deserved win with many hours of training from our swimmers and coaches. It takes a huge commitment of time, effort, and money to run a successful program. Special thanks go to all of the parents for organizing and running each of our meets (it takes between 80 and 100 volunteers to officiate and run each meet). We raised over $3000 with our two Pancake Breakfasts, and used that money to purchase new training equipment and awards for our swimmers.

As always, we say good-bye to a great staff. Our lifeguards do a wonderful job of keeping everyone safe. They do much more than guard the pool. They are responsible for keeping the facilities clean and safe, answering phones, collecting guest fees, and providing first aid. We hope everyone has a great year at school and look forward to seeing them again next year.

Hope everyone has a wonderful fall and winter, and we will see you again in the spring!

SWIMMING POOL NEWS -- AUGUST  2005

Summer is certainly flying by! We have had the busiest summer at the pool we can remember. It is always great to see everyone back each summer and we have really enjoyed getting to know our new families. We hope everyone will continue to come to the pool until we close on Labor Day.

School is starting soon, so remember you can come out to the pool after school and on the week-ends. Parties can also still be booked at the pool for during hours or after hours parties. For details, contact Millie or Karen at extension 29.

Our guards have done a great job running the pool and working with the kids this summer. We will miss our guards that will be leaving in a few days for college. We wish them well, and look forward to seeing them back again next spring.

Even though the summer is winding down, we are still trying to build our water aerobics program. Currently we have classes on Mondays at 4:30 p.m. and on Thursdays at noon. We are also trying to organize other classes so for more details or suggestions, please call the pool. It is a great way to get in shape and have fun!

The Green Meadow Swim Team had one of the most successful seasons ever! We won each of our five dual meets by a wide margin, capturing the League Six championship. Several swimmers placed really well at the Smoky Mountain Invitational also. A big thank-you goes to our parents who helped organize and run our meets, to our pool staff for their help, and to our coaches for an outstanding job.

If there is any way we can help you at the pool, please let us know.

                            Thanks, Karen and Millie

As we go to press, GMCC Swim Team is competing in the City Swim Meet (July 29, 30, 31) and our swimmers are doing very well….we are “THE” team to beat. To check on details see web site listed below:

SWIMMING POOL NEWS -- JULY  2005

Summer is here in full force with all the hot weather so be sure to bring your sunscreen! We’ve seen lots of crowds at the pool and have been having a blast. Pool activities are well under way with swimming lessons, swim team, lap swimmers, and lots of pool parties. We are also starting a water aerobics class that will be offered a few times a week. For more information on class times and details, call the pool. Swim lessons are also available at the pool on a daily basis with a variety of skilled instructors. To set one up, call Millie at extension 29.

We would like to remind all of you that small children should not be left at the pool unsupervised. While we do have lifeguards, we may not be able to concentrate on one single swimmer. With so many young children at the pool, it is difficult to focus on one when all of them need to be watched. We also need everyone’s help in throwing away trash and leftover food. With so many swimmers at the pool, it is difficult for us to keep the area clean throughout the day.

The snack bar continues to stay busy. We appreciate your input on things you would like to see and remind you that no outside food or drinks are allowed at the pool.

The swim team had its first meet against Bennington-Farrington on June 16th and brought home the first win of the season. We will have three home meets this season, on June 29th, July 7th, and July 12th. The pool will be closing at 2:30 to set up on those days, but you are invited to come out at 5:30 and support the team.

We are looking forward to a great rest of summer and a terrific pool season!

     Swimmingly,

     Karen and Millie

SWIMMING POOL NEWS -- JUNE  2005

The pool opened Saturday, May 28th to kick off the summer swim season.

We have many familiar faces returning this summer to help make the pool a safe and fun place for you. Karen Rule and Millie Franklin will be managing and most of the Guards from last year will be returning. We have already begun scheduling summer swim parties, so please call to reserve your date as soon as possible. Please call the pool at 982-8783, ext. 29 for information and prices. If you are interested in private swimming lessons, please call Millie Franklin at the pool or at 806-6806.

We will keep a couple of lane ropes in the pool for lap swimming again this year. We hope to offer a Water Aerobics Class this year if there is enough interest. Please call or come by the pool and let us know if you would be interested so we can get classes scheduled.

The Swim Team kicked off with the 3rd Annual Pancake Breakfast and the first practice on Monday, May 30. The Swim Team is also having a Pancake Breakfast at Up The Creek Restaurant on Saturday, June 25th from 8 am till 10 am. Tickets are $5 each, and you can purchase them at the pool office or from Swim Team Members. The Swim Team receives all the proceeds from the breakfast. These two Pancake Breakfasts are the two main fundraisers for the Swim Team, so please come enjoy a great breakfast and help support your team!

The pool will be closing at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29th, Thursday, July 7th, and Tuesday, July 12th for Home Swim Meets. Please come cheer the team on to victory! Please check the bulletin board at the pool regularly for announcements and scheduled events.

We are looking forward to another great swim season, and hope to see everyone soon.

Karen, Millie and Staff

     Hello Green Meadow Swim Team,

Thanks to everyone who donated and/or worked at our Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast!  It was a huge success in more ways than one?  We made about $600 from it but the best thing that happened were new and old friends getting together and socializing on such a beautiful morning!  Thanks again for everyone's participation.

Just a couple of thing I need to pass on to you from the coaches.  First, there will be swim practice if it's raining...unless there is thunder and lightning.  The swimmers actually enjoy swimming in the rain!  The coaches' will clear the pool if the weather turns bad during practice.  Second, please have your swimmer's name on all their swimming supplies...towels, t-shirts, shorts goggles (use medical tape and put initials), bags, etc.  This would be so helpful at the end of practice.  The lost and found box gets very full every summer so be sure to check it periodically if you are missing something.   The goggles go in a box in Karen's office so check with her for missing goggles.

SWIMMING POOL NEWS -- April 6, 2005

Pilot Aquatic Club of Knoxville will be hosting USA Swimming stroke and turn clinic on Saturday, April 9th at 7:30am in the upstairs classroom of the Student Aquatic Center at the University of Tennessee.  We will have available handouts and the open book test available to take with you after the class.  Southeastern Swimming Officials Committee member and Pilot parent, Trish Mitchell will be conducting this clinic.

This clinic is the first step in becoming a certified USA-S official. Also, this clinic will benefit those of you who participate in summer swim team officiating.  On-deck apprenticing opportunities will be available during the 17th Annual Volunteer Invitational, May 6-8, 2005 at the University of Tennessee Student Aquatic Center

Please make plans to attend this important clinic on April the 9th.  Please let Richard Goodman know via email, good8820@aol.com if you will be attending.

The GKAISA city meet date has been set.  It will be:  July 29-31, 2005 at the UT Aquatic Center.  Their calendar fills up quickly so the date had to be set quickly.  Southeastern Swimming has not finalized their summer long-course championship meet date yet and will announce it after Oct. 2, 2004.

Plan your vacations around this important weekend.  We need every swimmer there !!!!

September 2004

It is time for us to say goodbye for the summer at the pool. Our last day of full time operation is Monday, Sept. 6th. We are planning to add two more weekends for you to come enjoy the pool. We will be open Saturday and Sunday, September 11th - 12th, and Saturday and Sunday, September 18th - 19th. It has been another great year for us. We hope everyone enjoyed the activities at the pool and will be back next year! There have been constant activities with the Swim Team, the Learn-To-Swim program, private swimming lessons, adult lap swim, and more parties than we have ever had scheduled at the pool. We had a lot of new families this year and it has been the busiest summer in my 17 years at the pool. Thanks to our members and staff for a great year.

As most of you have noticed, our guard staff is almost gone, so remember that we are running the pool and staffing the Snack Bar with only a few guards. With school starting earlier each year, we lose most of our guards in early August. We hope they all have a great year at school and look forward to seeing them back next year.

The Green Meadow Swim Team Team enjoyed another fun and successful season bringing home the Second Place trophy from the Greater Knoxville Area Championships. A huge thank-you goes out to all the parent volunteers for their support and hard work. The Swim Team families worked incredibly hard this summer to finance all the Swim Team expenses. Our 2nd Annual Pancake Breakfast on Memorial Day was a huge success (raised more than $500) and certainly got us off to a great start!

We want to thank Maryville Orthopaedic Clinic and East Tennessee Medical Group for their sponsorship again this season. Our Pre-competitive Program was at capacity this summer. Our older Swim Team members teach these young children, and it has been extremely successful. In addition to all of this, with our revenue from our “Barn Party” (PHOTO BELOW, RIGHT, team equipment sales and donations, we were able to pay our six great coaches, purchase our team supplies and awards, purchase our end of the season gifts, and send our three Co-Coaches on a great trip to Barbados, and give “back to school” bonuses to our Assistant Coaches. This is truly an exceptional group of folks who personify the word “TEAM.”

Thanks for a great summer!

SWIMMING POOL NEWS -- AUGUST 2004

The GMCC versus Crestwood Hills dual swim meet (see photo below)  was the last one of the season and the margin of victory for GMCC was substantial.

Thanks to everyone who worked to make our "Barn Party" a great success!

Our gross revenue was a little over $3100 and our net proceeds were approximately $1900.

A very special thanks to Lauren Berry and Millie Franklin ( our wonderful pool managers and former Green Meadow swim team members) for all of their time, energy, effort, and organization spent putting this event together.
Thanks to Connie and Dan Berry for the use of their beautiful place.

Thanks to those who got items donated and those who purchased items for our Silent Auction.  It was a great success.  This and other money we raise will go toward our City Meet and Smoky Mountain entries, and our end of the year gifts which are a significant expense.

SWIMMING POOL NEWS -- JUNE 2004

June was an awesome month at the pool. The weather cooperated, and there has been a lot of activity at the pool. It has been great seeing our members back from last summer, and we want to welcome all the new members and their families.

July Fourth is just around the corner and we hope
everyone will come out to the pool for our legendary “Annual 4th of July Pool Party”. We will be open from 12 noon until 7 pm on Sunday, the 4th, for your convenience. We will
celebrate with an entertaining afternoon of games, contests, and prizes for the whole family. So bring your family and friends to the pool and enjoy the food, fun, and festivities!

The Green Meadow Swim Team is off to a great start! They splashed their way to victories over Village Green (409-320), and Bennington Farrington (409-323). Upcoming meets include Jefferson City (away) on June 29th, Knoxville Racquet Club (away) on July 8th, and Crestwood Hills (home) on Thursday, July 22nd. The pool will be closing at 3pm on the 22nd to set up for the meet. Come out and cheer on the team.

The Swim Team is planning a “Barn Party” and Silent Auction for Members and their families and friends on Saturday, July 24th, at a nearby farm. Please look for more details at the pool and Clubhouse bulletin boards. The evening will include food, music, dancing, games for kids, Silent Auction, and a cash bar for the adults.

We need your help keeping food and litter picked up off the pool furniture and deck. Our guards have to spend a lot of time picking up trash and cleaning food off the pool deck. If each person will throw away their leftover food and trash it will help keep the pests to a minimum. Please check the Lost and Found at the pool; it is overflowing with lost towels, shoes, suits, toys, etc. Please put name on personal items and that will help us get them back to you sooner.

Thanks and see you at the pool,
